12–18 days · 210 km · Northeast Anatolia
Few routes in Turkey demand as much of a traveler — and reward as generously — as the Kaçkar Mountains High Trail. Stretching across the northeastern corner of Anatolia, this path threads through glacial valleys, past ice-blue lakes hidden above the treeline, and over passes that brush 3,900 meters.
The trail begins in Yusufeli, climbing steadily through pine and beech forest before emerging into broad yayla — the high mountain pastures where Laz and Hemshin communities have kept their summer traditions alive for centuries. You will hear the kemençe played at dusk, be offered tea before you've introduced yourself, and sleep under skies that feel impossibly full of stars.
Descending toward the Black Sea, the terrain transforms completely. The dry Çoruh Valley gives way to a subtropical density of rhododendron, tea gardens, and warm coastal air. This dual identity — arid east, lush west — is what makes the Kaçkar unlike anything else in Turkey.

The full journal entry covers gear lists, village guesthouses, transport logistics from Istanbul, and day-by-day route notes from someone who's walked every kilometre.
